Join the Foundation in Celebrating Sight in March!

Our 2006 promotional
NEDM poster.

Most of us don’t wake up each morning thankful for our ability to see. In fact, many of us probably take for granted the countless number of tasks we are able to complete each day thanks to our healthy eyesight- like driving a car, reading a book or even recognizing a familiar face in a crowd. However, for the over 46,000 people who receive a cornea transplant surgery each year, seeing each new day is a reminder that thanks to eye donation, their vision has been restored.

Throughout the month of March 2006, the Heartland Lions Eye Banks will join the Eye Bank Association and the eye banking community to celebrate National Eye Donor Month. Since 1983, this annual observance has been a time to urge others to consider eye donation, while also honoring the gift of sight with cornea transplant recipients and donor families. Each year, a member of Congress reads a proclamation into the Congressional Record to note the special occasion. This year Representative Charlie Norwood (R-Georgia), an organ transplant recipient, served as the proclamation’s congressional sponsor.

During March, the Eye Bank hopes to reach an increasing audience with its message to “share the vision” of eye donation. We have developed a variety of educational and promotional materials on eye donation to encourage others to pledge to become an eye donor. However, we need your help in reaching those in every corner of the state of Missouri. This month, the Eye Bank encourages you to visit our web site to download a poster about National Eye Donor Month. This promotional poster would be perfect to display in your Club’s meeting hall, area schools, or other popular gathering spots in your community!
