Throughout the month of August the Missouri Lions
Eye Research Foundation is asking for your help to let parents
know that vision examinations by an eye care
professional are essential for young children
approaching school age.
Vision conditions like amblyopia,
commonly known as "lazy eye," can cause
permanent vision impairment in children if left
undetected an untreated. Amblyopia effects approximately
4% of all children, but can be corrected if caught
in early childhood before the visual system is
fully developed. A healthy visual system is key
to a child's success in developing and learning
once they have reached school-age.
The best line of defense to
protect your child's vision? Take your child
to see an eye care professional for a full examination
before entering preschool or kindergarten. Additionally,
the Foundation's Amblyopia
Prevention Program can assist in early detection
of amblyopia in children from ages 6 months to
five years. However, this type of vision screening
should not be used as a substitute for a visit
to the eye doctor.
